| As I was wondering around the OC
this last week I fell upon Ultimate Discounts in Placentia. On first
appearance it looked like part 99 cent only store and part Big Lots,
not a store for the elitist bargain shopper. But after you look
a little deeper, you see that it’s more than that.
If you know how a business works it’s easy to size up why
the deals are there. Having seen more jobber / liquidator type stores
than most, I quickly gathered what this store is about.
Ultimate Discounts carries liquidated stock in freight damaged,
shelf pulls, last seasons manufacturer, factory refurbished and
department stores overruns and overstock. Some of the merchandise
is in pristine condition and some isn’t. But the savings are
serious, averaging 20%-80% off original retail and if you live in
the area this place should be a regular haunt.
Though reasonable well organized, shopping here isn’t an
easy. You’ll have to work a little harder than normal to go
through the cluttered racks and shelves packed full of deals on
name brand clothing, toys, home décor and house wares, linens,
hardware, canned goods, mattresses along with home theater and electronics.
Many items have the original tags on them and were originally on
sale at Target, Sears, Costco, and JC Penny. I found a grouping
of 100% cotton sheets sets at 220 TC for $32 instead of the original
$49. Around the corner were a lot of toys with a Disney Pirates
of the Caribbean Ultimate Pearl Play set at $34.99 instead of $48.
A High School Musical dance mat was just $14.99 instead of $21.99.
Some of the buys here are advantageous but not something you plan
on. A bunch of laundry soap was on one aisle and a bottle 52 oz
bottle of Downey was $3.99 instead of $5.75. A little further on
was a bunch of jars of Classico Spaghetti sauce for $1.99. How about
a Brita pitcher water filter system for $14.99-$17.99 or a bunch
of Ziplock sandwich bags at just $1.99? All are cool buys if it’s
stuff you use.
In the corner were good buys on mattress sets. However I couldn’t
find a manufacturer name or even a good description besides “Double
pillow top”. Prices range from $249 for a twin set to $599
for a king set.
In the center of the store were good buys on flat screen and plasma
TV’s. All were a good 30% or more off original retail but
some dated back a few years to as early as 2004. Most look to be
new discontinued, floor models or customer returns. A Panasonic
53” HDTV flat screen TV was new from November ’06 and
priced at $1299. A 2005 new, unused Maxent 42” plasma flat
screen was a good buy at $899. Retail would have been upwards of
$1500. A huge JVC 61” flat screen TV was unused at $1799.
Originally built in December 2004. It would have cost well over
$2600 then.
Ultimate Discounts is a great haunt for intrepid bargain hunters
to pop in and bag a bargain. But it’s a hunt and you need
to know what you are looking at. Caution is needed on the home theater
and electronics. They do offer a 7 day exchange on most products
and a 120 day exchange or repair for home theater and electronics.
Most do not come with original warranties.
