Supermarket (secret) bargains at “Fresh & Easy”

At the fairly new “Fresh & Easy” supermarkets, the fresh and/or artisan breads are reduced in price by 30-40% on a daily basis at approximately 3:00pm.  In addition, at 9:00pm (1 hour before the 10:00pm closing time), fresh food items that are “expiring” the next day are pulled off the shelves and placed in their “clearance” section, which discounts those items by 50%. You never know what you’ll find, which makes the hunt rather fun! I have purchased many of the items at bargain prices and placed them in my freezer for future use (i.e., fresh pizzas, humous, breads). Most clearance items are still available at 8:00am when the stores open, so get there early for the best pickin’s!

I am there tomorrow. I know there’s one in So. Glendale. Based on your description I love it. Will report. Save dough on dough. Sorry bad pun. Thanx for insight

Or, save bread on bread!  Looking forward to reading about the treasures you find in the clearance section.

Fellow bargain hunters, I just went to my favorite Fresh & Easy supermarket (at approximately 9:45pm) to snag some “clearance” items. Much to my surprise, and disappointment, they have just changed their policy regarding mark-downs.  Here is the most current information:
1) On the evening before a fresh food item’s expiration date, those items are marked down 25% at 8:00pm.
2) On the actual expiration date, the same items are marked down 50% at 3:00pm.
3) At 7:00pm on the actual expiration date, those items are marked down 75%.
4) At 3:00pm, sushi items and breads are marked down 50% on the date of expiration.
5) At 8:00pm, the cycle repeats itself.
So sorry for the confusion, particularly since I just posted the original message yesterday.  If you time it right, you could still pick up some great bargains.  Enjoy the hunt!

I love Fresh & Easy but I just heard that they might not make it financially.  Does anyone know about the ecconomic stability this food store?

I think they’re in it for long hall. they are from Great Britain and new it would take a lot to make a dent in stateside supermarkets. They are currently expanding though i don’t think they anticipated this economic storm. On the plus side they should be able to get properties cheaper now:)

Thanks for the heads-up about F&E.  I am so addicted to the store brand i.e. canned vegies; bag pop-corn and excellent poultry (quality and price point) that I would consider it a great loss.
