Weekend Musings

By Suzanne O'Connor

Busy weekend with us tracking iPhone App numbers, doing a bargain shopping segment at KFWB with Bob McCormick, discovering a new travel iPhone app, Trader Joes deals and recipes, Barneys Sale, Beatles Monoploy, freaked out over parking charges at Staples and a trip to the ER…. Never a dull moment over here.

Wow-Apparently over 500 of you downloaded our new, FREE iPhone app last week. Thank you!  We’ll be tweaking it as we go to make sure it servers its purpose. Check it out here:
http://www.bargainsla.com/mobile/  and Available at the iTunes app store.

Popped into KFWB to do a bargain shopping segment on deals on large appliances with Bob McCormick for Money 101. Should air this coming Friday 2/25 between 9am-11am.

Read in the Sunday LA Times about another new Free iPhone app that lists same day hotel deals. It offers 3 hotel deals everyday at noon local time in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC.  Great if you often travel on last minute notice. Available at the iTunes app store.

We’re real fans of Trader Joes. Just tried out their canned cat food (w/ 9% protein) at 49 cents can… cats loved it. We’ll be adding to their diet of “Wellness” to save money. Also those folks who demonstrate recipes at Trader Joes should be canonized. A friend made a recipe of a tomato soup in a box with added sausages and stuff and thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Trader Joes should video tape them and put it on their website, so everyone can try them out. Will get the recipe to share with you guys.

Glad the Barneys Sale is over… Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really good sale, but I rarely make it anymore since we have a Barney’s Outlet up in Camarillo and out in Cabazon (near Palm Springs). The deals are better at the sale… especially the last few days. But you can really get some steals at the outlets too.

Played Beatles Monopoly this last weekend during the rain. Instead of properties you buy albums. Houses are listening parties and hotels are concerts. Tokens are The Walrus, Here Comes the Sun, Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, Strawberry, Octopus’s Garden, and Rocky Raccoon. Prime real-estate Park Place and Boardwalk are Apple Studios and Abbey Road Studio.
Fun… but weird. Got ours on Amazon last year.

Tried to visit the Grammy Museum near the Staples Center Sunday. $15-$30 for parking? Have they gone mad? Their website said it was $8 to park… but a special event was going on so everyone had doubled their pricing. Next time I try to go I’ll take public transit and walk.

Lastly, spent Friday afternoon in the E.R at Glendale Adventist Hospital. Our daughter got a concussion playing baseball. Though hanging in the E.R is not fun, especially when you’re worried about your child, I have to say it’s one of the very best ER’s I have ever been in. They were fast, thorough, knowledgeable and efficient.  Treated us like people not a number. Thankfully the kid is okay… no real damage done. It was only $6 to park for 4 hours.
