Time to Throw Stuff Out!

By Suzanne O'Connor

Over the years, to be frugal, I have saved décor and stuff I regularly use during the holidays again and again. Paper and ribbon are saved and re-used. Décor is packed away and brought out again, gift bags are saved and used throughout the year for gift giving as well as lunches and other things that have to be toted around.

This year I realized I may have saved some stuff too long.

Last week I pulled out the Easter goodies: Porcelain rabbits, decorated baskets and plastic eggs as well as some egg dying kits and table top displays. Everything had been packed into multiple boxes and stored in a shed.

The plastic eggs have grown to be in the hundreds. Many of them have lost the ability to close and stay shut, have faded in color, or still have candy in them…EW! I should have thrown some of them away.

The Easter dye kits are so old the exterior packaging faded in color and I was afraid to use them. The ribbon on the baskets were faded and frayed. The metal center pieces had warped.

The kid is not as enamored with Easter as she was a small child and it was time to unload.
Sometimes, wanting to save money and be frugal, you can keep stuff too long.

So this year I threw out a bunch of stuff. I took the faded ribbons off the baskets and threw them away. I took the baskets, all but one table top display and a bunch of the plastic eggs (that still worked) to the Salvation Army.

The boxes are down to one… half filled.  I feel better now.
