Time to Give Uber a Try

As a native, L.A. raised gal I have seen our traffic go from ok …to horrendous. I don’t need to tell you how bad it is or how we got here. But, the truth is our traffic congestion plays a daily, stressful, negative role in all of our lives.

But we recently tried out Uber. Normal costs with UberX (basic) is around 25%-50%  less than a taxi which makes it easy to get around for less. Considering the price of Gas, Car Insurance, Car payments and Car repairs, as well as the hassle of driving and parking in our crazy town, we can easily see why Uber has taken off.

I asked our Uber driver what type of people he sees using Uber. He said all kinds. He said he had driven all ages and groups. People use it when they go out at night, to and from their jobs, when they go to the market or on errands and to the Metro bus and rail connections. I loved the idea of using Uber to help people connect with mass transit.

But now Uber just implemented a new concept that takes ride sharing to a whole new level…. Uber Pool

With UberPool, you share a ride—and split the cost—with another person who just happens to be requesting a ride along a similar route. Saving you up to an additional 50% … if another rider is going on basically the same route. You still get Uber-style on-demand convenience and reliability: just push the button “like” before and get a car in five minutes. When they find a match, they’ll notify you of your co-rider’s first name. If people really start using Uber Pool it could really cut back on traffic.

With the addition of Uber Pool, we are now considering going from 2 cars down to just one car and using Uber as needed as our secondary ride. We’re guessing we’ll save about $150+ a month in costs as well as saving time and stress.

Like anything else, there are tricks to using and saving money by using Uber. Like learning about surge pricing and how to avoid it. We still have to figure that out as well as other details.

So for the next 3-6 months we are going to try to use Uber … or even Lyft a lot more to ascertain our actual use and what the real overall savings might be before we sell our second car. But it does look promising.
