The Road Less Traveled to the Orbit
This weekends beautiful weather had us taking, of all things….. a drive. Even with gas at over $4 a gallon, we headed out without a real plan or destination. We headed up through Big Tujunga canyon into the mountains, caught the Angeles Crest highway and somehow ended up in Littlerock on Pearblossom Highway.
That’s when I remembered an old junk yard haunt we used to go to called the Orbit. Lucky for us it was still there.
Caught in a time warp, this quirky place has more stuff and junk than anyone really needs or wants. But there be bargains here. The fun part is hunting for a gem in the raw here
Encompassing a full back lot, there is stuff strewn about and everything needs examination. There was old piles of office furniture, rusted farm tools, claw foot tubs & sinks, motorized parts, home furnishings, dusty record LPs, some glassware and china and brick a brack strewn about.
A bit more organized than I remember, it was a little easier to treasure hunt than our last visit ten years ago. I spotted a few gems well worth the drive including two white, 1950’s all metal patio chairs for $45 each. I’ve seen these in mid century collectible stores for $150-$200 in the same worn condition. An old metal milk carton for $25, which would have sold elsewhere for $75 or more. Western wagon wheels for $20-$120,that would have been triple any place else and some old farm equipment for $165. That we considered as a focal point for our dry garden
We ended up buying a metal wagon wheel ring for $18 and the metal milk carton for $25…both for our backyard. Had to clean out the metal milk carton… and kill the black widow living in it, before we put it in the car.
Do stop in if you’re in the area for some bargain gems in the raw … or just for the entertainment value, if nothing else. Plan on getting a bit dirty while you poke around. It’s old fashion fun and it’s cash only.
