Our quest for bottle of wine and learning the costs involved:
We recently went to one of our favorite local restaurants for dinner and a glass of wine. When it comes to wine, we are no gourmands. We’re just “give us a glass of your house Merlot” type of cats. We usually spend about $6 or $7 a glass but this time around our waitress recommends Cortijo by Rioja. It is a “Tempranillo”, something I know nothing about, but based on her recommendation, we decide to give it a try even though it was $11.50 a glass…it was Suzanne’s B-day after all…lets splurge, and boy was it good.
It was so good in fact that when we went back again, we wanted more. Armed with our limited knowledge that if you plan on drinking more than two glasses, it is worth it to buy the bottle, we bought a bottle. Cost…$31.00. But still a deal at $11.50 a glass x 4 glasses= $46.00. A bargain!!! Saved 15 bucks right? Well… yes and no.
We liked this $31 bottle of wine so much that we decided to get it for home and gifts. So off I went looking for a bargain. First stop Trader Joes. Nope/dont have it. BevMO/yes at $11.99 bottle. Wow. 30 bucks to 12. We bought 2 bottles even though it was not part of their buy one/get one for a nickel campaign.
So a month later I’m shopping at this mall in Glendale that houses a Petco. I’m running in there to grab some food for our cat Oliver. Next door is a World Market. Wanting some marzipan, I decide to stop on in. I check their wine section and find Cortijo @ $9.99 a bottle. Then I notice that for members (am one) it was marked down to $7.99. This is cheaper than our other favorite inexpensive wine Bogle Merlot. Bought 6 bottles. These will be used as gifts.
The lesson here is to keep your eyes out for a deal ALWAYS (even when shopping for catfood or marzipan). Remember what you are searching for and pounce on it when you find it at the right price. Also if you haven’t tried marzipan you are missing something wonderful.
