Mattress Dilema

When mom passed away last year, she gave my daughter family heirloom, an 1860’s Victorian bed set. It is a really stunning set that has been passed down through the generations to the women in the family.

We had been storing a good quality full sized mattress set. But when I went to put it in to the Victorian bed, I found to my total dismay that it didn’t fit.  Apparently, they didn’t have the same sizes way back then. Drat drat and triple drat! I needed to get custom made mattress. We decided to put off purchasing a custom sized mattress indefinitely and stuck my daughter’s twin size mattress in the Victorian to make do for awhile.

It looked rather ridiculous… and my daughter rolling into the gap created by putting a twin where a full should be really was ridiculous. But I was not ready to order or pay for a custom mattress.

A recent trip to Larry St. John to hunt for another furniture item found us all oohing and aahhing all over a mattress by local company MBC Mattress. … Especially my daughter. She wouldn’t get off the mattress.

This high quality mattress (The Impressions Line) had a double pillow top with visco memory foam topping on top of high-grade foam, 338-13 gauge coils and other layers. It was a dream to lay upon and came with a 30 year, non pro-rated guarantee. Which is the best guarantee I have ever seen. No commercial mattress manufacturer offers a non pro-rated guarantee. What I didn’t know was that this local manufacturer would custom cut a mattress for us and at Larry St. John we could have our custom sized mattress for us at about 40% less than we could find it elsewhere.

Since this was a custom order to fit a family heirloom, we went for the highest quality, The Impressions. MBC has other lines available at Larry S John, The 5-Star Diamond and Casablanca Sunset, both of which are favorites and 4 star hotels nationwide. We ordered our custom sized mattress (almost a full size) for $959.  Retail on this level of quality from other manufacturers would have been $2000- $2300. MBC mattress sells elsewhere for $1949 in a full size. As soon as we got home we called in our measurements.

Now the fun of picking up new bedding comes in. Since the mattress is only an inch narrower than a regular full, I am hoping not to have too much trouble buying bedding.
