Fourth Fun for Less

By Suzanne O'Connor

Our Fourth of July Holiday Week always includes Mom in Law’s birthday.  Since she comes in from out of town, every year we try to make it special without breaking the bank. This year with the extreme heat, it got a little harder. Free outdoor activities were off the plate. But we were able to slay a great Birthday Week for her as well as keeping her out of the extreme heat.

Our first big outing was the entire family going to the King Tut exhibit at the California Science Center.  The permanent Galleries are always free, but adding in King Tut was $130.

King Tut and the Science Center took an entire day plus we visited the Space Shuttle Endeavour and every other exhibit there we could. We BBQ’d steaks at home that night instead of eating out.

Next outing was the Nethercutt Collection & Museum in Sylmar.  This collection is so awesome, full of surprises and it’s FREE! If you haven’t been, GO! One of the best days out ever! I’m not gonna spill the beans about the exhibits. Just know that you’ll see much more than great old cars.

That night we grabbed a delicious, but cheap Taco dinner at Guisados in Burbank. 3 of us ate for $24.

Next day we went to the Ronald Reagan Museum for the Genghis Khan Exhibit. Since we knew nothing about Genghis Khan, we got a great education and glimpse into him and the Mongolian people.  That exhibit runs thru August 19th.  Truly enjoyable and a must see!

The Reagan Museum cost $25 for adults, $22 for seniors, bringing it $72 for 3 people. Since their next special exhibit is all about Pompei, we decided to join for a year. Family Membership covered 4 people. We figured if we went just one more time we get our money back. But if we went 3 times, we’d be saving enough money for the effort. Cost $122.

We packed a light picnic lunch to eat there and then had a homemade Pesto Pasta and salad for dinner.

A day of rest was in order. So we had neighbors & friends over, brought in Bagels and had Mimosas for a nice lively indoor brunch. We followed up by watching movies at home, and hitting Fosselman’s Ice Cream for their incredible Peach ice cream that night.

Grandmas next big outing was just with her grand daughter at the Gene Autry Museum. Admission for Seniors and Students is $10 each. Sweet.

On her last day we took her shopping including a visit to Happy Eyes to pick out new eyeglass frames. The finale for her visit was the Happy Hour at Damon’s for Mai Tai Monday. Nuthing quite like getting “ looped“ with Grandma!

Our total cost for the week of Birthday fun, $380…. Not bad considering all the stuff we did. Grandma is well worth any expense, but we did get a strong bang for our buck!
