Dont Forget Mom

By Suzanne O'Connor

Being a mom is a lesson in real self sacrifice. Yes, sacrifice comes with parenthood and it’s suppose to be that way, but it doesn’t change the fact that mom made sacrifices for you. Don’t feel guilty, but celebrate your mom by remembering her on Mothers Day.

If your bank account cannot reflect how much your care, let your actions do the talking. There are plenty of inexpensive things you can do to make mom feel special.

1. Help her with some harder to do chores around the house, gardening work, handyman repairs, cleaning or decorating. The entire family can get involved. Finish the day with a homemade meal or BBQ.

2. Instead of buying her flowers, take the time to plant some in her garden. Tulips, Lily’s etc will brighten up the yard and come back year after year.

3. Take mom on a scenic drive up the coast or through the mountains, or even to visit friends. Pack a picnic of delectable treats to enjoy!

3.Tell her how important and special she is in a poem or letter and then have it nicely framed.

4. Take her out for a day of beauty. Hair cut, pedicure or manicure, facial… whatever she may enjoy.

5. Give your mom an afternoon with you! Not with your kids or spouse along, just you. How long has it been since you spent uninterrupted time with her? Look at old pictures, reminisce, or go window-shopping, whatever. The point is just being together.

6. If a card is just all you can do this year, make it special. Have everyone in the family write a little note letting mom know how important she is.

7. If you’ve got younger kids they can create a short play for Grandma, sing her a song, or recite a poem.

8. Create a gift basket with all of her favorite treats. Whether they are chocolates, coffees, cookies, wine, a special condiment, jelly or pastry. She’ll really appreciate the effort.

9. Create a special photo album or collage of photos of you and Mom (or Mom and the kids) Arrange them in an album or craft a mural of different photos and design the frame yourself.

10. Have your kids make a homemade book of artwork. Keep the pictures the same size to keep the book uniform. You can laminate it… it will last longer or tie it up with ribbon.

The most important aspect of Mothers day is remembering her, not how much you spend. So go spend some time with mom and let her know how special she really is..

Happy Mothers Day.
