Bedding Saga

By Suzanne O'Connor

As any bargain hunter knows, it’s the thrill of the hunt and the deal that keeps us going. Occasionally, though… the hunt is not so much fun and you end up exhausted & frustrated from trying so hard.

If you read the last weeks blog, you’ll be familiar with the back-story of my great grandmothers Victorian bedroom set that was given to my daughter. The first problem was getting a mattress to fit it. With that problem solved I moved on to the next issue. The bedding.

Going from a twin to an almost full bed requires new everything. Might seem this was a fun bargain shopping problem. But not if the user of the bed is an opinionated 13-year-old who wants bold, bright teen designs. But, this incredible Victorian Bed is old Walnut and because of the extreme styling of the Victorian era, Target or Pottery Barn kids type bed ensembles wouldn’t work. This bed demanded richer more elegant bedding.

I showed my daughter dozens of online pictures of bedding that would work and she’d have none of it. We went to discount showrooms, outlets and tried and true bargain hot spots. We searched through catalogues, store sales, liquidations and even Ebay. If I liked it and it was a bargain, my daughter didn’t like it. We could not come to an agreement on what she liked verses what would work.

I was pulling my hair out!

With the new mattress now ordered and soon to be delivered, I gave up trying to find a fabulous bargain and gave myself a top price point I could afford.  I was about to give up and throw in the towel when I came across BeddingandBath.com. Carrying dozens of manufacturers I looked through everything and came across a totally cool, hip comforter set w/ all the right color and a hip modern scheme.  Elegant, yet young and the tones totally work with the bed.  Bingo! She loved it.

The manufacturer was Hallmark Collection, made locally here in Sun Valley. The price $170 for a comforter and 2 shams.  It got here within a week.

I also picked up a set of 300TC sheets and a full sized down blanket at BargainOutfitters.com for a blow out price of $17 and $39 respectively, so I saved some there. I also got 3 down pillows at Overstock.com for $49 each. One for her and 2 for us.

Between the custom mattress and bedding I’ve spent over $1200.  A lot more than the original plan of $300 for bedding.  That’s what sometimes happens.  Suddenly you have to buy something you hadn’t planned on. At least I saved big time on that!

The mattress arrived on time from Larry St. John and fit beautifully into the 145 year old bed.  My daughters happy and is now making her bed every morning (a miracle in itself) The bed looks great, as it should.

We love the mattress so much that hubby and I are planning on ordering another one at the end of the summer from Larry St. John. Thank fully this one is a standard queen.
