A Tour of the OC

By Suzanne O'Connor

This weekends tour of the OC had me wasting a lot of the time in heavy traffic. I’m not complaining, just frustrated I didn’t get more stores squeezed into a long day.

I spent most my time in Tustin, Santa Ana and Orange. You’ll see my happy, in depth review of Furnishings Direct in Latest Bargain Finds this week. I also checked out many previously reviewed stores to make sure they were all still around: Van Dorens Consignment, Big Y Yardage, Mothers Secret and the new Far Below Retail.

Van Doren for the Home is a home furnishings and Décor Consignment Boutique. Now operated now by Dennis,  the son of the original owner, still offers an eclectic array of house hold items from antiques to collectible and gently used to basic items at some really good pricing… around 20%-50% below market pricing. One item, a wrought iron plant stand was $40. I almost bought the exact same plant stand at an Estate Sale the day before for $80. Great for accessories and knic knacs, it’s a hunt here, with solid deals on every item.

Mothers Secret is a kids consignment shop in Orange that still is overstocked and crammed with gently used kids and baby clothing and gear along with a smattering of maternity for soon to be moms. Savings are still 50% or more below original retail. When my daughter was little and I was teaching at Chapman College, I used to haunt this place on a weekly basis. Rarely came away empty handed.

Big Y Yardage Outlet was quick stop. This full service upholstery fabric store was busy. Range of selection was terrific was bolts of upholstery fabric in chenilles, cottons, poly blends and more. Savings are 20%-50% on a large selection of high quality yardage. Though the discounts are not as steep as downtown LA Textile district. You ‘ll still save a bundle without the drive and expense of driving up to L.A.

I hadn’t been into Far Below Retail before, and when I showed up I found a super busy store. I spotted some fair deals on mattresses by the Good Mattress Co. and BeautyRest at 30%-50% savings… or so the signs stated.  There were no prices on the sofas and chairs, guessing these must be custom ordered product.  The quality of the product looked pretty good… tight, straight seams, enough padding, decent designs and quality fabric all made here in the USA….

But I couldn’t get the attention of the sales crew who were busy working with buyers to ask those all important in depth questions. So I left, determined to come again on a weekday when it was less busy. Looked promising.

Since it was now getting late I decided to start heading north… the traffic was even thicker than before. This visit to the OC was done for the day.
