Craig’s List Lives

By Suzanne O'Connor

Early last year we saw several of our best resale furniture stores close up. With the furniture biz in the dumps, I found it surprising then as well as now that more of these kinds of stores haven’t opened or thrived. Buying older used furniture for less and then sprucing it up is a great “Bargain” way to find quality furniture at the price you want.

Seems like now everyone is shopping Craig’s List for furniture deals. Last year I tried selling a couple of pieces of older furniture on Craig’s List without any response. This last month I tried again and have been besieged with responses. Lawyers, film producers, nurses, actors, students etc have all answered the Craig’s list postings. I have successfully been selling accumulated or inherited furniture I have no use for. The rule of thumb when selling used anything is you should only ask for 25%-35% of its original value. Especially if it’s not an antique or vintage piece. Price it higher than that and the response will be lighter.

When times change people behavior changes as well. Happily more of us are shopping thrifts, garage sales and Craig’s List than ever before.  The deals have always been there and now more of us are flocking to these bargain resources.

If you haven’t cruised through Craig’s List before it’s well worth a visit.  It’s classified heaven and a bargain hunters market.
