Goofing Off at the Surplus Store

We went out to research a store this past weekend, and when we got there they had closed early because it was a Holiday Weekend. Really….

With time on our hands, we stop into a local Burbank Navy/ Army Surplus, The Supply Sergeant. Army Surplus stores are great. Prices are always pretty low on fun basic items from tees to jeans and earthquake supplies to fatigues.

Shopping off the Beaten Path

I love snooping around neighborhoods I don’t normally shop. Discovering small mom and pop outlets, resale boutiques or warehouses is more fun when you don’t know they are there.

So last week while seeking out a new outlet store, we drove down into Pico Rivera by following Telegraph Rd South from the Citadel Outlets.

Saturday Shopping Fun

With so many sales happening and my being behind on my Christmas shopping, Kevin and I opted this last Saturday to visit the Saturday Sale at the CMC. There were a ton of great better labels there ….DKNY, Young Fabulous and Broke, David Cline, Blank Noir, Joseph Ribkopf, David Cline, Click, Blanco Noir as well as some dealers who are always there.

But it’s the “Old Ball” dealers that catch my eye.

Shopping Local

AAAHHH… the shopping season. Besides selection, cost, parking and traffic issues, there are other things to consider when heading out to shop for the Holidays. Of course, you want a deal, and to keep more of your hard earned money. But you should also consider keeping more of the money you spend, in the local economy.

Opportunistic Freebies

I’ve been known on occasion to trash pick… dumpster dive and otherwise peruse for free used items.

In the last 5 years, we have found a Kohler Memoirs Porcelain sink, wrought iron patio furniture, a faux white wicker garden chair, high quality gift wrap paper & ribbon, a wicker chest of drawers, glass table tops and some 1920’s glass door knobs.

Passion Re-ignited

For those of you who have been following BargainsLA since 1999, you may recall that when we started it, I was teaching dance at several universities and dance studios around Los Angeles. I slowly cut back on teaching and finally in 2005 quit completely.

I slowly got physically weak… didn’t like that much. So I decided to do something about it.

Weekend Bloopers

As adults we’re suppose to have learned how to be able to communicate effectively.

Well, that didn’t happen as well as it should have this last weekend for a Fathers Day get together.

Weekend Bargain Foray

Over the weekend with the kid at Disneyland all day and a sleepover that night, we took the opportunity to bargain shop out of our immediate area, researching out in Riverside. We stopped into a cool outlet called Water Heater Depot, but that was just the beginning.

Weekend Shopping

As a mother of a teenager, I don’t shop for costumes anymore. If my daughter wants to dress up for Halloween, it’s on her. That said, I have used the ‘cover” of Halloween shopping to turn my daughter on to vintage, resale and thrift store shopping the last few years. It has paid off with her having learned that shopping “used” may take a bit more work, but you can really score some treasures. She has also been cultivating a taste for vintage.
