Grey Market Know How

Describing what I do is complicated to non retail/ non manufacturer industry people.  Usually I say something like, “I research, post and promote Discount Outlets, Sample and Warehouse Sales.”

But when I am talking to someone in the industry, “I say I cover the direct to the public Grey Market sales and outlets.

Clearing Out the Old

We bought new clothes this winter. We hit the sales and bagged some amazing items for both of us. Since there was no space to fit our new wardrobe items into our closets and drawers, it was time for a clean out. With the rainy weather, it was a good time to get on it.

A Bargain Bust

Often while checking out outlets with steep discounts of 40%-90% off retail, I have to stop myself from shopping.

Generally, I yawn at 20% savings. I take note at 30%, I pay attention at 40% and am likely to look at 50% off original retail. Though I try to be careful, I will buy, regardless of need, at 80% off.

I’m Headed to the Mall

It may sound odd, even out of step with who I am and what we do here at BargainsLA
But I’m headed to the Mall. The retail mall… not an Outlet Mall.

I’m actually excited about it.

Friends Who Pay Full Retail

I am often perplexed by people who ONLY pay retail, ONLY buy at Boutiques and Department Stores.

Believe it or not, I have had several friends who only pay retail. They live in the best neighborhoods and eat at the trendiest restaurants. These guys only buy brand new, latest and trendiest at top dollar.

Couture Learning Curve

Back in the day, I knew less than nothing about clothing quality, design and fit. In my early twenties I lived in jeans, plaid flannels, sweats and lace up army boots. I was the epitome of poor Melrose hip.

At the time, my mom was writing a bargain shopping column for the LA Times. Occasionally I would spend the day with her at some of her favorite stores. Spending time with her was always fun. Her wit and sense of play made everything an adventure.

Repairing & Refurbishing

The other day while pondering my chairs re-upholstery options, I wondered does anyone repair, recover or refurbish stuff anymore?

As I was cleaning out my closet this Summer, I wondered the same thing. 1/3 of my shoes are not repairable. Either they are so poorly made or they are plastic.  Most will end up in the landfill.

What a waste.

Tunnel Vision

When I know I want to buy something, I become a singularly focused shopper. I leave no stone unturned, doing thorough research on pricing, quality, manufacturers and availability. I literally hunt everywhere. I have saved money and made better choices this way.

Big Savings, Little Savings

Kevin & I went in early to last weeks Robin’s Jean Warehouse Sale to shoot some video and finally meet the designer, Robin.  After a great visit and quickie video shoot, we were allowed to shop the sale early.

After 40 minutes we walked away with 9 pairs of jeans, paying $280 instead of $2300. YAY!

But, every single pair has to be hemmed.
