Back to School Prep

Getting the kids heads focused on going back to school is always a challenge.

During the Summer, all of us would avoid talking about going back to school and would instead concentrate on Summer fun, the last lazy days of Summer with family Beach trips and BBQ’s.

Secretly, I was quietly on top of it by Mid July.

Relying Too Much on Technology

We love technology. It does make many things in our life faster and easier. We actively use a lot of it. Waze and Google Maps, Amazon Echo and dozens of different Smart phone apps as well as owning 5 computers ad an iPad.

We get it.

That said, we also do not let technology rule our lives.

1980’s Technology Throwback

When I was little, my mom had an expensive heating pad that was in a word… AWESOME! She used it daily. It was worn, stained and faded, but keep working great. After she passed, I kept it and used it till last summer when it’s early 1980’s technology finally broke down. It lasted over 30 years. Seriously!

Annoying Calls

Our business, BargainsLA works out of our home office. We have only one land line for both the house and the business. Though we used to get lots of phone calls and at one time had two separate phone lines, we are down to one and are now considering cutting that line as well.

The Eyes Have It

I have driving sunglasses that I use because I am a bit nearsighted with astigmatism. Lately my distance eyesight seems to have gotten better, so I haven’t felt like I had to go in for an eye check up.

I have never really needed reading glasses. I read the newspaper daily as well as a bunch of business related articles on he computer. But at the end of the day, after 6 hours on the computer, my eyes were tired and achy. So after much nudging from hubby, I found a new Optometrist and went in….

A Disposable World

In our disposable world, we tend throw stuff out before we repair or re-use it.

Our grand parents and great grand parents didn’t do that. They repaired, saved and re-used items. But they didn’t have the technology growth we have had.  Everything can be recycled somehow.

Small Mom and Pop Outlets

One of the aggravating aspects of bargain hunting is trying to shop… or in my case, research small mom and pop outlets. Unlike corporate outlets, or even manufacturer outlets, the little indie discounters are often doing it all by themselves. These industrious entrepreneurs do it all…..buy product, merchandise, advertise, do deliveries and pickup, handle city/ state legal & paperwork issues and as well as do retail sales with little to no help.

Coping with the Summer Heat and the Electric Bill

Growing up in Southern California, I’m pretty used to our Summer Heat waves and have developed several techniques for keeping cool and keeping electric costs to a minimum.

Our usual electric bill hovers around $90 a month. Last summer it got up to $350 a month. This Summer we’re aiming to keep it down to under $200. Here’s how we’re trying to accomplish it.

GoDaddy Issues

Geeze, I hate getting taken. It riles me up to the point where what comes out of my mouth is dangerous.

I own a bunch of web domains thru GoDaddy. Most of these are undeveloped. I keep them for upcoming possibilities as well as limiting conflict from similar domain names.

Usually GoDaddy is responsive to any issues. But yesterday they were not.

Buying Cheap Stuff….Cheap

My first choice in shopping for anything is to always buy the best quality I can afford. Most of the time this is a much better deal than a cheap item that is made poorly. So much so that I often do without until I can afford a better quality item.

But there are times when you should buy cheap items, cheap. These times are when I go to $1 Store or a Thrift store first.
