Online Sample Sales 07-23-2008

You can’t deny the fact that sitting in front of a computer saves gas and time. Here’s an online sale and  a sample sale site worth perusing:

More Sample Sale Sites

More websites are dedicated to sample sales than ever before.
We have another one to peruse. TheTopSecret.com

Discounts are up to 75% off retail and each designer sale runs 1-3 days.
That’s all I was able to get for the Top Secret. You have to join and I am already tired of all the e-mails I get from the other online sample site sales I already get.

The problem with online sales is not being able to feel and touch the item you want to purchase. If you’re not familiar with the line it can be a problem. Several Sample Sites I am a member of consistently run out of product before I ever get to see it.

Then there’s the return issue. Sometimes mixed in with the perfect product are the seconds and irregulars. These are sometimes sub-standard enough to change the fit and effect the wear of the product. Some sites don’t do returns and if you can, you lose shipping costs. No savings there.

You can bag a deal at these sites. But shop with care for labels and product you know very well.

Jury Duty

This last week was a first for me. I did my civic duty as a citizen and served on a jury.

Like most of us who lead super busy lives, I didn’t want to do it. I pleaded financial hardship… that didn’t fly. I answered the questions and offered up information I thought would make the lawyers want to get rid of me…. Nope, I was in.

This week, turned out to be a real education. I listened to testimony, observed the lawyers arguing their case and ultimately 12 people from vastly different lives deliberated the evidence and worked together to come to a verdict.

Though, serving ate up 4 whole days of time that was very precious to me, in the end I am glad I served. I learned a lot about the justice system. Some of it was disturbing, but mostly it was enlightening. Being there this week, gave me the chance to see the principles this country was founded on, put to work. Even the lowest, creepiest criminals get a shot at justice.

I also got to walk around a lot during lunch breaks. I finally got a chance to see the Bradbury Bldg., and The Disney Concert Hall up close. Both are spectacular. I watched a protest in front of City Hall, read about our country’s flags at the Civic Center’s Court of American Flags and look around The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Since the LA Courts are the busiest in the country, most of us will get summoned at some point to serve. Yeah it will make a week or two difficult, but ultimately it’s a small price to pay to be a United States citizen.

Summertime is Ice Coffee Time

The summer heat tends to make me sluggish and sleepy, so I usually partake in a daily ice coffee at Starbucks to brighten up my spirits. As I reported in last weeks newsletter, over 600 locations of Starbucks are closing, and yes, a bunch … about 85 are in California with around 50 being shuttered in Southern California.

I got into Starbucks, simple cause there were so many around. I especially loved the one at the LA Courthouse when I did jury service last week.

You Starbuck aficionados may have to find an alternative for your daily cup of joe. Perhaps a competitor like Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf or maybe just your local coffee shop. Me….I guess, if forced, I’ll brew my own and then pour it over ice.
