Computer Installation
3pm…Utter and complete chaos has taken over as we install and bring up to speed our new IMac computer. As easy as Macs are, we have to bring it into our network of 3 other PC’s… a 7 year old Dell, a 5 year old Sony Vaio and a 2 year old HP Lap Top.
My husband is lost amongst the piles of dismantled cords & wires from the old computers with all the peripherals. I keep hearing him talk to himself, “Where does this go?” “What the heck…?” “Oops!” He babbles to himself as he works it out.
5pm….Our finely tuned, tightly wired, organized home office has disappeared. Boxes, packaging materials are everywhere. Computers are strewn about haphazardly. I think the Dell is the one I am typing on, but I can’t be sure. Web cams will have to find new homes. Keyboards won’t know which computer they belong to. Which mouse is this? Our computer family is being re-blended. Worries of early retirement are rampant.
6:15… My husband is lost. He is in a world of computer wizardry and design. He goes on and on about the fine design points of a Mac while Huell Howser goes on about fine time pieces on PBS. It’s surreal…. “Look at this, see how it blends with that. It’s seamless!” he goes on as he shows me a plug. “Have you ever seen such impeccable design?” “Look at the packaging… it’s brilliant!” “See how the monitor screen moves.”
Yep he’s gone!
I concede, “Yes IMac’s are great! Incredible designs … love them. Can I have my husband back now?”
6:45… I offer him a salad which he gobbles down. I am now stepping on screw drivers and tie cords scattered over the floor. I think I sat on something that belonged to our HP Lap Top. I heard it crack.
7:00… Our daughter has taken the hint, grabs “her” Sony to save it from an early demise and disappears into her room. Maybe I’ll go deliver some Girl Scout Cookies.
8:00… We get a break. Our neighbor comes over with wine cheese and crackers. The company brings my husband back from the abyss of computer hell. The computers are now all hooked up and talking.
9:30… Three glasses of wine later the chaos littered around our home isn’t as disturbing. But there’ this large blue Ethernet cable across my desk running out the door so the new IMac can have internet access until we can go wireless again. Hubby’s loading I Tunes and programs into the I Mac. The I Mac screen is amazing clear. Some things won’t gel with the IMac. The process of getting it to work with our older PC’s will give me a nervous breakdown. I can’t take anymore and retire.
4:30 am…A tap on my shoulder wakes me to find he’s still up playing with his new IMac. He can’t wait to show me how it all works. I ignore his pleas and hide under the covers.
He stayed up all night to get everything running to speed. It’s a good thing he did. We have an e-newsletter, a new bargain source, a bargain alert and hot sales to post before noon. I may book a flight to Nepal and climb Everest for some sanity.
