During our home renovation this last Winter, I headed back and forth to fabrics stores in downtown L.A. about 10 times to shop for upholstery and window treatment fabrics. Though the selection and prices were great, driving into downtown and paying for parking each time, got a bit old.

I felt kinda stupid when I completely forgot about long time, tried and true fabric outlet, Sterns Drapery and Fabric in Sherman Oaks. I accidentally drove by Friday afternoon and decided I had to stop in.

In a non-descript old bank building are thousands of bolts of fabric from sheers & silks to heavy chenilles and tapestries all at 25%-65% off retail pricing.

Owner, Kevin Stern buys overstocks, closeouts and discontinued bolts in bulk and passes on the savings. You’ll find everything here from current patterns to discontinued vintage and everything in-between. If you do interior designs, this outlet should be on your list.

Some highlights for me were some totally cool upholstery cotton velvets in an unbelievable chartreuse. At $8 a yard it beats anything I found downtown. A silver marbled vinyl was totally Hollywood Regency and beautifully priced at $15 a yard. An exquisite Asian themed high-end cotton / rayon fabric is selling a F & S at $66 a yard. Here it’s just $24!

A bunch of Waverly fabrics in plaids and florals were here at $4-$10 a yard instead of $15-$25. A fabulous black and White toile with a redish background was just $10 a yard. About the same price as Michaels Levine’s. You can find polyester lace here at $8 a yard instead of $11-$15. Formal looking cream and white brocades were closeouts at just $6 a yard. A brush cotton canvas was $10 a yard and a deeply colored European print chenille was $14 instead of $22-$35.

Stern can also order any fabric out of a book or catalog, but the prices edge up to near or at retail.

Along with the vast selection of discounted fabric, Sterns custom makes all kinds of window dressing, drapery, slipcovers and bedspreads at “competitive” prices. I got to see some of his work and the attention to detail and the fine finish told me his team are real experts delivering a quality well made product.

A worthwhile stop to save real money on upholstery and home décor fabrics!
