Re Use People of America

Los Angeles

By Suzanne O'Connor

With the summer months usually comes home fix it, re-decorating or home improvement projects. Do it yourselfers, handy men and the frugal minded home owners are always looking for ways to save.

One of those ways is with the ReUse People of America. This demolition company de-constructs upscale homes and resells the usable parts back to the public at much more lower pricing. Think of it as a resale Home Improvement.

Here you’ll find cabinets, sinks, doors, screens, lighting, timber, appliances, cabinets, bricks, windows, architectural elements, hardware, chandeliers, roofing tiles, plumbing fixtures and more. Yes, these items are used, many are in need of TLC, but a lot are in very good condition, are well built and made with quality materials.  Perfect for many uses. You just need a little imagination and elbow grease.

Pricing here is low… 60%-90% below original retail. After all it’s technically salvage. A pallet of stone roof tile is $125. They had enough to do a roof of 5000 sq feet.  Bricks are 25 cents to 50 cents each.  Windows are sold by the foot…. Single pane is $3 a sq ft. Double panes are $5 a sq. ft. Under mount / top mount bathroom porcelain sinks ran $15. Bathroom faucets were $15-$50. Toilets were $45-$75. Interior shutters were $5 each.  Banister spindles were $1 each.  Two matching, beautifully done, statement making 10’ x 3’, built in display cabinets were only $50 each! Some gorgeous, (needing only paint) French doors including hardware were $125. New retail would be up at $1000+.  Interior doors start at $25. Glass blocks were $1 each. bathtubs start at $50 and a nearly perfect classic plaster mantel was $250…. New would run $750 +. There was lots of wood out in the yard, from 1” x 4” to large support beams. Great for dozens of different projects.

Appliances are returnable for credit within 30 days. But everything is sold “as is”.  You have to inspect each item. Nothing is refurbished or repaired. But all items were working when originally removed. I got the sense that they will dicker a bit if you’re substantially buying. I also know that they price things lower that have been there awhile.

The store is reasonably well organized, but do take gloves, wear appropriate shoes and clothing as the place is dusty and the yard is gravel and dirt. Have your measurements and take a tape measure with you. New shipments arrive weekly… and the good stuff goes fast.

This place is treasured amongst Real Estate Flippers, the Studios and Do It Yourselfers. If you haven’t been… go!  You’ll save a bundle.
