Glendale Youth Alliance

Landscaping/Yard Maintenance

By Suzanne O'Connor

Many home owners in the foothills need resources for reasonably brush clearing, landscaping, hauling and Spring cleaning chores. Business owner may need part time help to do computer work, marketing assistance, production coordination, office work etc. If you need help, office or labor like this and live near the Glendale /Pasadena area, you might want to look into the Glendale Youth Alliance.

Started in 1994, the Glendale Youth Alliance (GYA) provides job seeking skills and employment preparedness training for Glendale’s youth ages 14-24. They have several programs that provide mentored employment to youth and they’ll quote prices before starting work.

The Hillside Brush Clearance, Ongoing Landscaping and Yard Maintenance, and General Labor Tasks (GYEP Program) can provide you with a team of teens to help you out at a very reasonable price. If you live in or are immediately adjacent to Glendale, the Glendale Youth Alliance teen team, supervised by an adult Team Supervisor, will perform the work using their tools and haul away the debris in their vehicles. Their teen workers are insured for liability and workers compensation.

Though each job is different, the savings can be as high as 60%. My girlfriend when she was cited by the City of LA for brush clearance had her team of 3 gardeners work an afternoon to the tune of $2000 to clear the brush. The Glendale Youth Alliance came in and did the same job a year later for just over $800. The GYEP Program can also provide you with ongoing landscaping and yard maintenance. Call (818) 548-3727 for an estimate.

They can also help you with party set up and clean up as well as packing in preparation for moving (due to insurance requirements, they are not able to move you) and any other general labor tasks. Call (818) 548-3727 for an estimate.

Glendale’s Resource for Employment and Training (GREAT) Youth Employment Service helps youth ages 16-21 gain work experience. Operated in conjunction with the City of Glendale, this program is great if you need temporary staff, or if you want to try out a youth before hiring them on as a regular employee. These pre screened youth are on the City’s payroll, which covers workers compensation insurance and their rates are lower than traditional employment agencies. These teens are capable of administrative work, computer, receptionist/clerical, banquet staff, and light industrial. To hire a youth through this program, contact Paulina Bermudez-Zapien at (818) 548-3727.

Also if your business is willing to pay half of the hourly wage for an employee ages 18-21, this program will pay the other half for up to 250 hours. Workers can perform most entry-level jobs. Sound interesting? Contact Aylin Isayan at 818-548-2791.

This is a great way to pay less for manual labor, find and train new employees while helping a community help their kids. A great deal all around!
