Dishware/Home Decor

By Suzanne O'Connor

With the demise of The Libbey Factory Outlet in Walnut a few years ago,  finding basic dishware and tabletop items at a discount seem to go with them. But you savvy shoppers uncovered the Gibson Factory Outlet in Commerce and emailed me the scoop. Since buying factory direct is the best way to get quality at a discount and my ongoing penchant for dishware, I hurried over for a visit… I was not disappointed.

The outlet is at the corporate and distribution headquarters. In a large modern building, the outlet is a good size with well organized racks packed with ceramic ware, kitchen ware, dishes and objects d’art at 50%-90% off original retail…. I’m talking low retail at Target. But this line is sold to everyone from Crate and Barrel and Macy’s to Linen and Things and Kmart. The prices here are cheap… really cheap! And the selection is great!

Knowing I would pounce on a bargain or two, I took a cart and strolled down the aisles.
A 40 piece set in the Barnyard pattern was a mere $20. Try $39 at KMart. A 52 piece set of Gibson everyday in white was an even better by at $20. A HD Designs dinnerware set was also a great buy at $15 with a choice of 4 vibrant colors including a deep purple. A more elegant 20-piece set in “Tuxedo Gold” was a serious buy at $15. Retail is near $44. An embossed 16 piece glassware set was only $10. Hello! But my first pounce was on a set of 3 blue ceramic mixing bowls at $7. Retail is $25….Who could resist?

I was surprised at some of the items here. Coca Cola collectible dishes were here. A real bargain prize was found in a cookie jar in the shape of a 1950’s soda vending machine. I buy this at retail of $35. Here it’s $15. A classic Coca Cola mug was $.99. They even had bowls with the famous logo at $1-$6.

Anyone out there a tractor nut? They had collectible John Deere pieces… yes, the famous tractor company has sets of dishes with it’s famous logo on it. A 32 piece set was all of $20. You could placate your outdoor guy with a 3 piece canister set at $10.

Those of you who don’t even need any dishes will still be tempted by some of the cool designs and gift items. A coffee cup and saucer set had 6 cups and saucers in 6 different colors. Vibrant and very cool, this set was $14.99. Retail would be $30. Open stock in glass ware had some hand painted glassware flutes, goblets, martini glasses and tumblers ranged from $.50-$1.99 each. Some very large ornate Italian / Mediterranean urns and water jars were marked $50. New in the Gibson line, I am told these retail for $100. I hadn’t seen them before but at $50, they were a very fair price. An “oh so mod” set of yellow and orange polka dot dishes called “Mambo Mango” were $15 for a 16 piece place setting. Great for casual lunches.

But like all dishware outlets the bargain basement prices are on the closeouts and open stock. Ceramics bowls, cups, plates, canisters, glassware, pitchers, candlesticks, sugar bowls and more were $.25-$4 each. One bowl had a great earthy tone and elongated Japanese shape. Regularly sold at Target for $2.50, here it was $.75. How’s that for a cheap deal? Some of these closeouts are seconds, but most are simply remaining merchandise.

There are so many steals, deals and goodies here that visiting without a purchase may be impossible. The only drawback is that the outlet is only open Monday thru Friday. No weekends. But if you shop during the weekdays you can score just like I did. For $20.84 (including tax), I came home with 3 ceramic nesting mixing bowls, 6 occasional medium sized serving bowls and a stainless steel bread box ($10). The stainless steal bread box was for my hubby. Got to keep him smiling too.
