Eco Trader Discount Carpet
One of the best ways to save on carpet, especially if you only have to do one or two rooms to do, is to buy carpet remnants.
Remnants are “end of roll” or discontinued carpet. Dealers who sell remnants are a dime a dozen. But to find one that really carries high grade carpet and has been in the carpet biz for over 20 year is a find.
That’s what I found when I popped into a small warehouse in Panorama City called Eco Trader. Owner Mike buys manufacturer and store remnants, overstock, seconds and discontinued carpet at pennies on the dollar and sells them to the public on average at 50 cents a foot to $2 a foot. A good 70% off the original pricing.
The selection here was reasonably good with carpet by Mohawk, Wilton, Shaw. Karastan and others. Everything is in stock and ready to be installed. But since they are remnants, not every type or manufacturer of carpet is here at any one time.
I did spot a nice nylon Berber at $6 a yard. Near the bottom was a slight mis-weave. Mike was very good at pointing it out. Retail would have been $18-$20 a yard. A Frisee plush 12 x 8.9 piece was $100 instead of $300-$350. A large 12 x 31 ft remnant of commercial grade carpet was just $185. A Wilton 11 x 43 ft wool woven carpet in a patterned cream was $1200 instead of $3100. A unique, knobby, 6’8” x 16 ‘ designer rug was $349 instead of $1000. A roll of Jute 6’ x10’ carpet would normally set you back about $800. But here it’s $200. A large remnant (12’ x 57’) of a moss green, floral scroll patterned carpet was a great buy at $890. Retail would run $3400. Prices here do not include padding or install.
Mike would prefer if you bought the entire remnant roll …but he will cut it if he has enough left over to sell. He’ll advise you on how long the carpet should last, what you should look for, quality and other insider secrets so you can get the best bang for your buck.
To buy remnant carpeting you should probably already have a good installer picked out. If you don’t, Mike can recommend one, but you should still do your homework and make sure that whoever you use is experienced, bonded and can provide 3 references. A bad install job will ruin the life and wear of your carpet.
Eco Trader is a one-man operation, so you should probably call before you head over.
