Chip Drop

By Suzanne O'Connor

If, like us, you are working on new drought resistant landscaping and are looking to add wood chips or mulch to your garden, you should check out Chip Drop.

Chip Drop is a service that helps connect arborists with homeowners and gardeners in their area who would like to receive wood chips. They’re currently working with arborists and homeowners in the Los Angeles area create a list of people who would be interested in receiving a delivery of wood chips to their house…. FREE. They’ve already helped deliver over 500 loads of wood chips so far this season in other cities around the country.

Chip Drop is a free service for both homeowners and arborists. No credit card information is required to sign up. All you need is a valid email address, and a location that you own or manage where you’d like to have woodchips dropped. When you sign up for an account, you’re site will be visible to all the arborists using our service. Your contact information will also be relayed to the crew in case there is an issue with the delivery.

There are a couple of caveats…. You’ll get between 4 to 12 yards of wood chips delivered. So you’ll need a big enough driveway to handle that. 4-12 yards may seem like a lot, but wood chips break down quickly, and it’s recommended to spread them in a thick layer to work effectively. If you end up having more than you need, give some away to your neighbors! Arborists can’t deliver partial loads, so be ready to accept up to 12 yards.

Also all loads contain approximately:
~95% chipped wood and leafy material, including pine and fir needles
~5% of the load may contain unchipped brush and sticks under 2” diameter

Another great way to save on your gardening and landscaping!
