Affordable Summer Camps

By Suzanne O'Connor

If you’re like me, come April/ May I used to freak out about what my kid was gonna do over the Summer. Since she always got good grades, I didn’t want to saddle her with Summer School too.
But then Summer camps tend to be expensive. There is always the local YMCA, which was a good fall back. But here are some other good affordable camps that have come across my radar with interesting sports, classes, science and art.

Hollywood Land Camp for Girls
A good sleep away camp that doesn’t blow the budget is Hollywood Land Camp for girls 6-17. Run by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and nestled up in the Hollywood Hills, your daughter will get the feeling of being far away, but isn’t. They load their days with activities including swimming, crafts, challenge games, campfire, climbing wall, field trips, themed parties and more. Weekly rates run from $375-$450.

Also run by LA Parks and Rec. are The Griffith Park Boys Camp
Griffith Park Boys Camp Summer Residential Camp Program for boys 7-14. They offer archery, swimming, nature hikes, outdoor cooking, climbing wall, high ropes challenge course, field trips, sports and more. Prices are $350-$450 each week from June 8 - August 7, 2015 (323) 664-0571 or GriffithParkBoysCamp

Day Camps are also cool and a great way to enrich your kids lives.

The California Science Center offers a series of Summer Day Camp designed for kids in different age groups at $140-$340 per week depending up age and what they offer.  These camps tend to fill up quickly. CaliforniaScienceCenter

The Natural History Museum offers a Summer Camp with a week at the NHM and a week at the Page Museum. Each week, every camp explores the same theme, from bugs to dinosaurs. Camps are created to be developmentally appropriate for each age group K-8. Rates are $300 a week. You can learn more here.

I also like the program at Glendale Center Theater for children.  They’ll learn everything from acting, singing and dancing to stage combat, movie making and Improvisation. Each session has a final performance where the kids show off what they have learned.
Each 2-week session runs $650. GlendaleCenterTheatre
